{December 24, 2013}   Tis the Season

Merry Christmas everyone!
May tomorrow find you in peace and surrounded with love.

{December 7, 2013}   Tiny Tree Christmas

TreeThis is my Christmas Tree in my new home 🙂  My first Holiday in my own place. It’s a small tree, only four feet tall. But you know what? It’s MINE!

I am loving having this house all to myself. I’m a solitary person as it is, so living in a house with three other people just didn’t work for me. I blast my music late every nigh, I sit at my kitchen table and write or work on my laptop. I use the restroom… and I don’t even close the door! Haha.

But really… I’m so happy in my OWN place.

Here’s a song I dedicate to my tiny, if sad looking, tree:

{November 23, 2013}   Holidays Are Approaching!

Lights

We’ve seen some snow here in New England- I woke up to a clean, crisp, white coating this morning. It’s a reminder that the Holidays are quickly approaching. Thursday is Thanksgiving already! I’m not a big fan of Thanksgiving. I’m not a big eater and poultry just isn’t for me. However there are only three days out of the year, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, when we have the whole family- brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, aunts and uncles- all under the same roof at the same time. There’s laughing, of course there’s arguing but best of all… there’s family. So I smile, eat some peas, squash and bread and patiently wait for desert 🙂

I’ve already been listening to Christmas music. My shower playlist- Christmas music. Radio in my car- Christmas music. Radio in my Ambulance- Christmas music. And once I get my Christmas bonus- Christmas music while Christmas shopping!

My all-time favorite Christmas song is The Little Drummer Boy by the Trans Siberian Orchestra:

And a little more new-age is Tiny Tree Christmas by Guster:

{December 26, 2012}   Avoiding Social Media

I’ve been avoiding the internet for about a week now. I wanted my Holiday time with my family, uninterrupted by tragic news and drama. I had a wonderful Christmas, as I hope you all did. My favorite part of Christmas morning this year was the look on my Mom & Dad’s faces when they opened the Kindle Fire I got them. It was priceless, their faces lit up like little kids and their eyes were filled with wonder.

Unfortunately as much as I tried to avoid the social media, the local news channels are just as bad. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the two volunteer firefighters who were senselessly murdered while doing their jobs in Webster, NY on Christmas Eve. It was an unbelievable act of evil. I realize that curiosity is human nature but it sickens me how much attention the media has given that terrible man who took their lives. The same goes for the massacre in Newtown, CT. It disgusts me. Let’s remember all of the victims and their families and try to forget the monsters who committed these awful acts.

My Deputy Chief put me back on duty this morning and just in time, too. We’re supposed to be getting one hell of a Nor’ Easter tonight and tomorrow. They’re saying 14″-20″ between tonight and tomorrow afternoon. Experience tells me that we will have people driving off the roads everywhere. It should be fun, cold and miserable. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m just happy to be back on duty!

Haha, me! And my brother. Long story short- my brother went to stand up as I was sitting down and our heads met in the middle. His head got me in the left temple and knocked me for a loop. It was pretty funny, but now I have a huge egg on the side of my head and my eye is swollen. But what better place than a room full of EMT’s and firefighters? Haha.

The party was a lot of fun. There was a lot of laughing and sharing going on. I finally got my uniform 🙂  I’m pretty happy. It’s only nine o’clock and I didn’t get out of bed until almost noon, but I’m exhausted (and I have a screaming headache)! The roads are sheer ice, but no worries because I had a couple of beers and I will not be going on any calls tonight.

{December 3, 2012}   I Am Blessed

Though many times I don’t realize it, I am blessed to have amazing people in my life.

Yesterday’s annual Family Christmas Party went great. I was surrounded by cousins and Aunts and Uncles who I only get to see a few times a year. We talked, we ate and we did our Yankee Swap. Fun was had by all. To add to the fun and festivities, my brother received a call from our Lieutenant at three o’clock and we were summoned to the station as planned. No one had any idea what was going on. To add to the mystery, our Lieutenant drove to my house in his Fire Department garb and summoned my brother’s girlfriend to the sidewalk out front. He called us on the radio and I led our little parade in: Me driving the ambulance, one of our fellow firefighters driving our Engine 1 with my brother riding on the cat walk and another of our fellow firefighters driving our Engine 4. Almost everyone congregated on our front lawn, which was still covered in snow, and my brother stepped off the cat walk when the engine stopped. HE went down on one knee before his girlfriend and proposed. It was amazing and of course… she said “yes”! We left my brother with his new fiance while we returned the apparatus, but not before we had pictures taken.

I am wearing the smiley face shirt, my brother's fiance is to my right and my brother is in the maroon shirt.

My brother gave me a hug when I returned from the station and it was the first hug I can ever remember where I could feel that he really meant it. Of course, while he was proposing I was standing at the rear of the ambulance watching with one of my fellow firefighters and I cried a little. This wouldn’t have been possible without the other guys from the department, who are incredible people.

Once again, I am blessed to have such amazing people in my life!

{November 23, 2012}   The Holidays Are Here

… And I refuse to do any shopping until Christmas Eve.

I can’t believe we didn’t get a single call yesterday. Isn’t some people’s tradition to set their ovens on fire on Thanksgiving? The only real excitement was when my Dad caught himself on fire last night and I got to beat the shit out of him. I can’t be a very good firefighter because I couldn’t stop laughing the entire time I was trying to put the fire out. It was incredibly comical. Don’t worry, no one got hurt.

Today my brother is coming over to hang Christmas lights on the house and later tonight my Dad and I will put up the Christmas tree. My Dad and I do it together every year. I wish my Mother would join us, but she doesn’t really care to get involved with family activities like that. It’s probably better that way, though. Less fighting and screaming. I can imagine how many ornaments would get broken if she were to help. Dad and I always have fun with it. We make White Russians, but instead of milk we put eggnog in it and a little sprinkle of nutmeg. It’s mmm-mmm good.

I’m going to attempt to get a nap in before the fun begins, though. I didn’t sleep well last night and my back is killing me.
